Josh Baum - Artist
I grew up in Bristol and at the age of 19 Moved to Spain where I started my journey as an artist. I lived for a year in Deia, Mallorca, where I discovered pen and ink - a medium which has always stayed with me. I went on to study painting in 1994 at the Massana school in the Gothic quarter of Barcelona.
I came to Israel in 1995 to live and work as an Artist settling in Sfat. I had a studio in the artist quarter and began to study in a Hasidic yeshiva learning to be a Torah scribe. I come from a secular family but we have Hasidic ancestry and I felt strangely at home. In Sfat, I started to make art using Hebrew letters. I painted the ceiling of the Abuhav Synagogue and began to write a Sefer Torah.
In 2008 after finishing the scroll, I returned to England to do an MA in Fine art at Central Saint Martins in London.
Throughout my twenties I had a recurring dream about a place on a mountain, with a great sense of space and beauty, and a few years ago I found myself on the edge of the Crater in Mitzpe Ramon. I am now living and working here, teaching life drawing and mentoring local artists on their own artistic journeys.
